Professor Seun Kolade is a Professor of Entrepreneurship and Digital Transformation at Sheffield Business School, Sheffield Hallam University, and a Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship and Business Management at the University of Ibadan. Across an academic and professional career that has taken him through Sheffield Hallam University, De Montfort University, Loughborough University, the University of Wolverhampton, London South Bank University, and back into active engagement with Nigeria’s higher education and innovation landscape, he has built a distinctive profile as a scholar, commentator, institution builder, and public-facing advocate for enterprise, technology, education, and societal renewal. Trained originally in civil engineering before moving into development studies and management scholarship, he brings an unusually interdisciplinary lens to questions of economic transformation, entrepreneurship, governance, digital change, youth opportunity, and Africa’s place in a shifting global order. His research spans digital transformation, transformative entrepreneuring, social and spiritual capital, refugee entrepreneurship, circular economy, entrepreneurship education, and SME strategy in turbulent environments, with growing recognition for his thought leadership on artificial intelligence, higher education, and the political economy of innovation. He has authored more than 120 academic outputs, including over 40 journal articles, nine books, and more than 70 book chapters and conference papers, alongside policy reports and knowledge exchange publications. His books include The Palgrave Handbook of African Entrepreneurship; Digital Innovations for a Circular Plastic Economy in Africa; Generative AI in Higher Education; and Generative AI in Research. In addition to his publication record, he has held significant research and academic leadership roles, Interim Head of Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange at Sheffield Business School, Associate Head International at De Montfort University, and Faculty Head of Research Students Training at De Montfort University. He is a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, a Certified Management and Business Educator, a UK Council for Graduate Education Recognised Research Supervisor, a member of the ESRC Peer Review College, an AHRC reviewer, and a recognised agile leader with both PMP and PMI-ACP certifications. He also serves in international editorial roles, including as Associate Editor of Technology Analysis and Strategic Management and the Canadian Journal of Administrative Sciences, and has contributed to research, capacity building, and consultancy work for organisations including the British Council, the Southern Africa Innovation Support Programme, and the United Nations system. His profile reflects not only scholarly productivity, but a sustained commitment to using ideas in the service of institution building, public debate, and practical transformation across Africa and beyond.

Public intellectual, ecosystem leader and social enterprise advocate

Beyond the academy, Professor Kolade has built a strong public intellectual profile grounded in evidence, but expressed in a way that speaks to policymakers, professionals, business leaders, development actors, and wider civic audiences. His public writing and commentary engage a broad spectrum of issues, including digital transformation, public service delivery, entrepreneurship, education reform, manufacturing, youth opportunity, and the future of AI in society. His published essays and commentaries have appeared in platforms such as The Conversation, Tribune Online, IE Insights, the Chartered Association of Business Schools blog, and AMBA’s Ambition magazine, reflecting both intellectual range and an ability to translate complex research into accessible, timely public discourse. That combination of analytical depth and civic readability is central to his appeal as a public intellectual: he writes not as a partisan polemicist, but as a scholar with a practical understanding of the institutional and developmental choices confronting Nigeria and Africa.

His public engagement is reinforced by a record of ecosystem leadership and social entrepreneurship. He is the Founder and Managing Director of Enterprise Republic, established in 2020 as a social impact platform dedicated to supporting aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, and start-ups. He also leads the DEFINED project, the Digital Education for Innovation and Economic Development initiative, alongside the Byte Busters coding club under the Oodua Investment Foundation. These initiatives sit at the intersection of education, innovation, youth capability development, and local economic transformation, and reflect his wider commitment to moving beyond diagnosis towards practical interventions. He is also the Managing Director of TecheSight Ltd, and has served in advisory and leadership roles across innovation and enterprise initiatives in both the UK and Africa. These activities position him not simply as an academic observer of enterprise ecosystems, but as an active participant in building them.

International research leadership and global standing

Professor Kolade’s international profile is equally marked by research leadership, capacity building, and cross-border intellectual influence. He has designed and delivered researcher development, doctoral training, and grant-writing programmes for more than 4,500 early- and mid-career researchers and research leaders across over 20 countries in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. His work in this area has included major in-person and multi-country programmes in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Southern Africa, and the United Kingdom, as well as workshops for senior university leaders and emerging scholars. This sustained investment in research culture building distinguishes him as not only a productive scholar, but also a builder of scholarly communities and institutional capability.

His international standing is further reflected in his funded research and collaborative work. He has contributed to, led, or co-developed projects supported by UKRI, the British Council, HEIF, and other funders, including work on digital innovation, circular plastic economy, digital adoption, African informal economy transformation, and entrepreneurship under conditions of disruption. He was a co-investigator on the UKRI-funded DITCh Plastic project and on the British Council-funded Circular Plastic Innovation Hubs project. In 2018, he was appointed to a United Nations expert group established by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on the operationalisation of social capital in situations of forced displacement, in recognition of his scholarship on displacement, resilience, and livelihood recovery. He has also delivered invited lectures and keynote addresses in the UK, Germany, Sri Lanka, the United States, and across African policy and academic platforms on themes ranging from AI and digital autonomy to entrepreneurship, social capital, and higher education futures. Professor Seun Kolade’s profile brings together scholarly rigour, international perspective, and a grounded engagement with the contemporary realities of Nigeria, Africa, and the wider world.
